Shannon Bodeker has been working almost exclusively in family law in Perth Western Australia since 1998.
Shannon established Bodekers Family Lawyers & Mediators in 2002. Shannon is the Firm’s Legal Practitioner Director.
Shannon is experienced in all areas of family law and particularly in the areas of child relocation, child custody and parenting arrangements, property settlement and child support.
Shannon has been admitted as a lawyer to the Supreme Court of Western Australia and the High Court of Australia. Shannon is a nationally accredited mediator, arbitrator and collaborative lawyer. Shannon’s qualifications include Bachelor of Laws (Hons), Diploma of Teaching (Dist), Bachelor of Education (Dist) and Post Graduate Health Promotion (Dist).
Shannon’s special interest is child relocation and she completed her Honours thesis “The Freedom of Movement of Residential Parents (and others) subsequent to the Family Law Reform Act 1995 (Cth)” in this area. In 1998 she was involved in the landmark High Court case AMS v AIF; AIF v AMS (1999). Her thesis was cited by His Honour Justice Kirby in that case.
Shannon has acted as an Independent Children’s Lawyer in the Family Court of Western Australia and the Children’s Court of Western Australia. She has also worked as a Senior Case Officer with the Child Support Agency. Shannon is actively involved in legal issues surrounding same-sex relationships and has worked in same-sex family law matters for close to 20 years.
Shannon regularly undertakes advanced mediation and negotiation training through institutions such as Harvard University.
Shannon is a member of many professional bodies including:
– Australian Institute of Family Law Arbitrators and Mediators (AIFLAM);
– Family Law Practitioners Association of Western Australia (FLPAWA);
– Law Council of Australia – Family Law Section;
– The Law Society of Western Australia;
– Women Lawyers of Western Australia (WLWA);
– Resolution Institute;
– Australian Lawyers for Human Rights; and
– International Academy of Collaborative Professionals (IACP).
Shannon has lectured at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in a variety of disciplines including law at the University of Western Australia, Murdoch University, Curtin University and Edith Cowan University.
Shannon maintains an active interest in child psychology and child development. She initially trained in education, receiving the Lloyd Pond prize for her studies in child psychology. Upon graduation, Shannon worked as a teacher, an education consultant and as a lecturer.
Away from work Shannon enjoys growing organic vegetables, walking, the beach, cooking and spending time with her loved ones including her daughters, friends and blue heelers.
