Whilst having a baby is exciting, in some situations there may be questions as to paternity. Essentially, who are the parents of the child? This question can arise before a child is born or even many years later.

Whilst Australian family law provides for “presumptions” of parentage, it may be necessary to determine who is (or is not) a parent. This can be determined in various ways including DNA testing, an acknowledgement of parentage or through a Court order.

The issue of who is a parent can be important, for example there may be child support implications or you may want to spend time with your child.

There may also be questions of paternity if your child was conceived through artificial conception.
